Historically, my work has been tied to Ukraine and Georgia.
The project was inspired by David Guramishvili, a classic of the Georgian literature of the 18th century. Guramishvili’s life was closely tied to Ukraine; he lived here and is buried in Ukrainian soil near the city of Poltava. His famous poem “Davitiani” was written in Ukraine, as well. At the time, the 275th anniversary of the poet’s birthday was coming up and promised to become an important cultural event in both countries.
David Guramishvili is a truly unique person. After reading “Davitiani”, one realizes that in addition to a poetic masterpiece it is a lament of his soul reflecting the outcry and grieving of the people of Georgia. The poem equally reflects both poet’s personal tragedy and the tragic fate of his country.
The poet loved Ukraine with all his heart as his second homeland. I wanted the book to showcase the glittering domes of the churches and temples, warm faces of the people, gentle, tender and emotionally rich landscapes that are Ukraine Guramishvili knew and admired.
The poem was translated into Ukrainian by M. Bazhan who also wrote the foreword for my book and whose continuous support is much valued and appreciated.
